Detroit downs Buffalo to finish fine preseason
Football Betting Lines
09/02/2010 - Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Drew Stanton threw a pair of second-half touchdowns and rookie Paul Pratt returned an interception 102 yards for the eventual game-winning score, as the Detroit Lions rallied for a 28-23 win against Buffalo to put the wraps on an encouraging preseason.
Stanton got the majority of snaps under center and threw for 94 yards on just 5-of-13 efficiency but two were on key scoring plays -- a 25-yarder to DeDe Dorsey and a 16-yard scoring strike to Derrick Williams.
Unquestioned starter Matthew Stafford worked a pair of quick series to start the game -- quick because the Lions' first drive ended in a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by Buffalo's Drayton Florence. Stafford ended 3-of-6 for 21 yards with the pick.
Dorsey drove the offense with 33 yards rushing and 59 yards receiving, while fullback Jerome Felton had a rushing touchdown as Detroit ended its preseason slate a promising 3-1. Detroit has just two total wins the last two seasons.
Trent Edwards started for the Bills and did nothing to hurt his chances of being the No. 1 QB come Week 1. He completed all four of his throws for 66 yards in lasting a full quarter. Next in was Brian Brohm, who threw for 78 yards on 7-of-15 attempts with an interception. Rookie Levi Brown finished out the game and was also picked off on the way to a 10-of-18, 92-yard showing.
Marshawn Lynch (ankle) saw limited action, gaining two yards on five carries while rookie starter C.J. Spiller was given the night off. Chad Simpson rushed for a fourth-quarter score and Chad Jackson led the receivers with 59 yards and five receptions.
The Bills raced out to a 16-0 lead in the second quarter before the Lions snuck in a score before halftime. Dorsey kept it going for the hosts on his 25-yard TD grab that made it 16-14 in the third quarter.
Williams hauled in the go-ahead score from Stanton four minutes into the fourth, and with under seven minutes remaining, Pratt was able to seal up the win by intercepting Brown deep in the end zone and taking it the other way to paydirt.
Simpson's one-yard plunge came too late for the Bills, who ended the preseason at 2-2.
Buffalo, coming off a 6-10 season, opens its 2010 campaign against the Dolphins at home on September 12th. The Lions will face the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field the same day.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value
If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture. Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).
For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot. The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.
TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.
"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,' it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."
"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.
Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash. Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards
Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.
Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.
Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.
Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.
All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.
A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
